A Glimpse on How Mochi is Made

On December 8th, 2013, some of us experienced how to make mochi. Mochi is a heavenly delicious desert or snack made from sticky rice. Sakurano Community Center held a public event to introduce people, especially foreign students, on how mochi is made. It was an exciting and informative experience!
There are several steps to make mochi. First of all, sticky rice is steamed and cooked. Then, we beat the sticky rice. The cooked sticky rice is brought to a large bowl made of stone which is put on top of a wooden support. The sticky rice is then beaten by three people that stand circling the bowl. A circular hammer is used to beat the sticky rice. The hammer is actually quite heavy and it requires some skill to beat the rice well. Each person beats the rice one by one in order. Lastly, we mold it into small balls.

That day, we got to talk with many Japanese people and practice our Japanese language skills. The people were really kind and helpful. They were really patient in explaining us on how to make mochi. We even played around for awhile with the kids who attended the event. They also gave us free mochi to eat with this special tasty powder. They even gave us some to bring back home! It was a really fun experience! Even though there was the language barrier, the people who managed the event and the member of the community made us feel welcomed, not only as the event’s attendants, but also as foreign students in Japan.
